Planting of saplings, taking out awareness rally on conservation of natural resources and distribution of pamphlets to the public formed part of World Environment Day celebration held under the auspices of Gandhi World Foundation here on Friday. Scores of saplings were planted at various parts of the town to mark the occasion.

Inaugurating the programme, K. Naina Mohamed, coordinator of the Foundation, said that the theme of the current year’s observance was ‘Fight against the illegal trade in wildlife’ indicating the need for protecting the wildlife. He emphasised the need for checking poaching of animals and birds through a sustained campaign. K. Mohan Raj, president of the foundation, said that it has been planned to organise a series of programmes involving students and youth to drive home the importance of environment.

R. Rajkumar, Senior Scientist of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, explained the need for motivating the youth towards conservation of resource.
